The article is devoted to the methodology of studying military motives in the lessons of Ukrainian literature in secondary school. The author defines the theoretical principles of interpreting pictures of armed struggle in an artistic text. The source of the study is the monograph of medievalist professor Mykola Korpanyuk "Perunova's Victory of the Nation" (2012). This work contains a scientific analysis of folklore and written works depicting the armed struggle of the Ukrainian people from the 9th to the end of the 18th century. The researcher identified teaching principles related to integration, contextuality, development of critical thinking and existential development of the individual.
