VASYL SHCHURAT – THE RECTOR OF UKRAINIAN SECRET UNIVERSITY

The activity of Ukrainian Secret University in Lviv during 1921–1925 is highlighted in the article. On the basis of the research of different sources not easy conditions of this and other illegal higher educational institutions, where Ukrainians of Halychyna were getting education, are shown. In spite of the mass repressions of the Polish authority against Ukrainian youth and intelligency, students and professors successfully organized educational process in the secret university.
Special attention has been given to the significant role of the rector of this institution Vasyl Shchurat in the creation of the Ukrainian high school. The scientific company named after Shevchenko took responsibility for reorganizing the educational press. First the University consisted of three departments: philosophical, law and medical. Soon they organized teaching at technical department and the department of arts. Rector Vasyl Shchurat was trying in all possible ways to popularize this secret educational institution in Ukraine and abroad as well. The graduates’ diplomas were recognized in Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Germany. The students showed thorough knowledge, studying abroad.
