WHEN WAS ASSUMPTION CATHEDRAL DESTROYED IN HALYCH?

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of written sources to establish at least the exact year of the destruction of the largest temple of Halych and the Halych land – the Assumption Cathedral. Through comparative analysis, diverse in origin and genre of narratives, the author concluded that there was no mention of its destruction not only during the first great Mongol campaign in Europe in the autumn of 1240 ( the winter of 1241 but during the subsequent major military events in the region by the end of the XVI century. Therefore, the popular in historiography idea that the temple was destroyed by the nomads in the middle of the XIII century should be finally discarded.
